Really loved the first 3 books and was really excited for this last book but for some reason right from the start it just didn't grip me like the other ones did。 I started eventually skimming and got to page 100。 Tried to just skip to the end to see what happens cause I wasn't caring but then literally got told off by the book for doing that so I went back lol。 After not picking it up for a few days I went to the audiobook to help me and managed to finish it but unfortunately I just didn't like Really loved the first 3 books and was really excited for this last book but for some reason right from the start it just didn't grip me like the other ones did。 I started eventually skimming and got to page 100。 Tried to just skip to the end to see what happens cause I wasn't caring but then literally got told off by the book for doing that so I went back lol。 After not picking it up for a few days I went to the audiobook to help me and managed to finish it but unfortunately I just didn't like this last book。 Also I didn't like who the unknown narrator turned out to be and I didn't like the weird Arthurian things that came in in the last few pages。 That was weird。 Soooo yeah Nah 。。。more

What a fun series! It subverted my expectations in some plot points and was predictable in others, but struck the right balance between the two for a middle grade series。

Cooper

My favorite in the series, and you finally figure out who the unknown narrator is!

Wow!!!! That ending was magnificent。 Love, LOVE how the author dropped that huge surprise at the end。 Absolutely loved it。 I really hope this isn’t the end of the series。

Sara

A satisfying conclusion that sees significant growth for our protagonists Xar and Wish。 Some Arthurian allusions in the epilogue may seem unexpected, but it's a fresh perspective on the legend。 Overall, a great fantasy series for middle grade readers。4/5 A satisfying conclusion that sees significant growth for our protagonists Xar and Wish。 Some Arthurian allusions in the epilogue may seem unexpected, but it's a fresh perspective on the legend。 Overall, a great fantasy series for middle grade readers。4/5 。。。more

Wish must now face the evil, powerful King Witch alone – with all manner of creatures, witches, giants and monsters looking on。 Will Wish’s spell work? The final in this thrilling series jam-packed full of witchery, sorcery, giants, a wizard queen and a wizard king who just might end up being proud of their rebellious children – sort of。Lots more action and the final battle to end all battles。 A spell has been spun, ingredients collected and a sword is ready to strike。 This being the fourth book in the series, I got to know the characters well and my heart was pumping while I cheered the young heroes on during the chaos of a magical fight to the death – but whose will it be?Another secret revealed is who the narrator of the story is…。 not telling! The books are full of drawings and sketches of the characters and action, but if you can get your hands on an audio copy too – it’s twice the fun with the book in your hand。 David Tennant is absolutely brilliant at telling the story, singing the songs, and giving the characters distinct voices。 I know these voices will remain in my head when I read this series again。 。。。more

If I haven't said it enough, this is a must-listen series。 It's narrated by none other than David Tennant, and he does a remarkable job of bringing the story to life。 I rarely take notes when listening to audiobooks, but this book had some real standout moments。 There's a section about two hours in where there is a call to abandon complacency and take a stand。 A lot of books right now have similar calls to action (mostly on social justice issues, and rightfully so!), but Cowell is always able to If I haven't said it enough, this is a must-listen series。 It's narrated by none other than David Tennant, and he does a remarkable job of bringing the story to life。 I rarely take notes when listening to audiobooks, but this book had some real standout moments。 There's a section about two hours in where there is a call to abandon complacency and take a stand。 A lot of books right now have similar calls to action (mostly on social justice issues, and rightfully so!), but Cowell is always able to make strong statements that are applicable to real life while not stepping outside of the fantastical world of the story。 There's what I imagine was an intentional nod to Dr。 Who fans at the 2hr 45min mark (view spoiler)[ "Annihilate it!" sure made me think of "Exterminate!" Anticlimactic end。 Everything happens exactly as it needs to and as you've been expecting it to, aside from the left-field epilogue, but even that's more like "oh, okay" than shock (view spoiler)[(Xar and Wish and Bodkin are actually King Arthur, Morgana and Lancelot。 Because why not) (hide spoiler)]。 There is indeed a death, but I was unaffected by it。 While I thought this installment might bump back up to 3 stars at first, the second half and especially the last quarter dragged on so slowly th Anticlimactic end。 Everything happens exactly as it needs to and as you've been expecting it to, aside from the left-field epilogue, but even that's more like "oh, okay" than shock (view spoiler)[(Xar and Wish and Bodkin are actually King Arthur, Morgana and Lancelot。 Because why not) (hide spoiler)]。 There is indeed a death, but I was unaffected by it。 While I thought this installment might bump back up to 3 stars at first, the second half and especially the last quarter dragged on so slowly that it took my enthusiasm with it。There is truly nothing to recommend this series, EXCEPT that listening to the next audiobook, as read by David Tennant, has been my favorite end-of-the-year treat for 3 years running now and this was no exception。 Mind you, it still took me 2+ weeks to finish a 6-hour story because that's how unexciting it is -- book 2 remains my favorite of the quartet -- but I did enjoy the purring Tazzelwurm, and I nearly cried when Squeezjoos the Poisoned was alternately raving about how Xar didn't love him, and threatening to chew his arm off in service to the Hctiw Gnik (so fun to say, btw)。 I also appreciated the various rounds of singing near the end。Lastly, because my lack of knowing this has annoyed me since book 1, I will tell you who the unknown narrator is (this is not a bluff, it is a dead dove situation so don't click the spoiler cut unless you actually want to know): (view spoiler)[Perdita, Caliburn's twin。 Whom we didn't meet until book 3, but sure。 Why not。 Maybe there's a reasonable explanation somewhere, but I don't remember enough of this series to puzzle it out。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

Laura

David Tennant’s narration is brilliant as always。 The ending makes me think there is going to be another series about these characters!

Jumps right back into the story after a quick refresher course, so no worries if you don’t remember the situation the characters find themselves in。 Delightful conclusion to a fun and creative series。 Listen to this one; David Tennant does a superb job voicing (and singing) this whole series。My kids; “I love this book!”Works for me。 :)

The finale of Cowell’s Wizards of Once series proves both cathartically climactic and something of a let-down, the extended codas drawing attention to a bloated cast of characters and the padding these provide。 Nonetheless, a rousing MG adventure, elevated in audiobook form。

An exciting and satisfying ending to the series。 I just love Xar and Wish。This is the first Wizards of Once book that I read on my own and not with my girls。 I requested the audiobook back during the summer and it was finally my turn so I just had to read it without them。 We’ll have to listen to it all together when we go on a road trip this year!
